College footballâs most historic weekend, rivalry weekend, heads into day two today, letâs break it down!
The Game: Michigan and Ohio State are two colleges synonymous with the history of the sport, and the rivalry may be the most heated in all of sports. The teams first met in 1897, and played annually and uninterrupted from 1918 to 2020. The Game has been highlighted throughout the year by legendary coaches, players, announcers, and moments. The two face off at noon Eastern time in Columbus, Ohio. All-time record: Michigan leads (61-5-6).
Palmetto Bowl: The annual South Carolina - Clemson football game has been taking place since 1896. The two largest universities in the state of South Carolina, the campuses are separated by only 132 miles. The two collegesâ bitter hatred goes far beyond the football field, as its roots go back towards political feuding in the post-Civil War era. The two play at 12:00 PM Eastern on ESPN. All-time record: Clemson leads 73-43-4.
The Iron Bowl: As hinted at in our trivia question, the Iron Bowl was first played in the late winter of 1893. The game features two charter members or the SEC and two of the largest universities in the state of Alabama: Auburn University and the University of Alabama. The name comes from where the game was originally played in Birmingham, Alabama, which was a leading industrial city in the early 20th century southern United States. The two face off at 3:30 PM on ABC. All-time record: Alabama leads 50-37-1.
The Duel in the Desert: One of the oldest football rivalries in the US will have its 125th edition today, as Arizona and Arizona State face off at 3:30 PM on Fox. First played in 1899, the two universities battle for the Territorial Cup. The rivalry has had its ups and downs, with both teams having their eras of domination. All-time record: Arizona leads 51-44-1.
The Lone Star Showdown: A rivalry renewed! Texas A&M and Texas University first met in 1894, playing each other each year until 2011, when Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC. The rivalry was put on hold, and the two will face off today for the first time since. The game kicks off at 7:30 PM in College Station on ABC. All-time record: 76-37-5.
