It’s officially official, six-time Super Bowl winning coach Bill Belichick is really a Tar Heel.

If you told me that the second-winningest coach in NFL history had to go to a struggling college program to find his next job, I’d be shocked, I might even laugh in your face. But it’s true. The most successful NFL in the modern NFL era has officially left the NFL for college football.

I’m not sure if he was blackballed by the NFL or if Belichick truly just wanted to move on from life as a professional sports coach, perhaps craving a new challenge. It doesn’t really even matter anymore, because it happened. It’s real, no matter how it came about, no matter why.

His father, Steve, served as an assistant coach in Chapel Hill from 1953-1955. During the introductory press conference, UNC chancellor Lee Roberts pulled out a copy of the 1954 North Carolina media guide and read an excerpt about Steve Belichick and his 2-year-old son ā€˜William Steven Belichick’. The chancellor welcomed back Bill to Carolina.

Belichick replaces Mack Brown, the winningest coach in North Carolina history, and will also replace Brown as the oldest coach in college football at the ripe age of 72.

Football at UNC has largely taken a back seat to basketball, as the last conference championship came in 1980. But the commitment to Belichick both financially and morally is a massive step in the right direction for the university. A five-year, $50 million deal is a big time commitment, and Belichick already sits in the top 10 of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

It’s no secret that Belichick will bring the squad with him, but only time will tell if Billy Boy will be able to win, and win big.
