In a win-or-go-home Game 3 in the AL Wild Card Series between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, both squads sent out rookie pitchers in the biggest games of their lives! What we saw last night ended up being one of the greatest pitching performances in recent memory!
Letâs start with the stat line. 8 innings pitched, 12 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 0 earned runs. This was the stat line of Yankees 24-year old Cam Schlittler.
Not only is that a phenomenal stat line for a rookie, thatâs a phenomenal line period. In fact, that is the first time in MLB Postseason history that someone has achieved those numbers! Unreal from the rookie in his first career postseason start.
He mustâve been playing all year for the Yankees, right?
No. Cam was not even at the Triple A level to start the year. He started the season in Double A (two levels below the Majors), and then after a few starts, made his way to Triple A. Again, he lasted there only a handful of starts before the Yankees called him up. It was a combination of him looking good and the Yankees losing starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt. They needed a guy and were hoping the youngster was ready.
Every question you could possibly have about the 24-year old was answered last night in one of the most dominant playoff pitching performances in recent memory.
The fact that he was in Double A just a little while ago is unfathomable.
To put this in non-baseball terms. This is like being an intern at a company, becoming a full-timer, and then getting another promotion all within 3 months!
To put this in terms of clothes, this is like a shirt thatâs never worn going from a back-of-the-closet piece, suddenly to a once a week wear, and finally to a piece that you wear on a first date with a girl thatâs way out of your leagueâŚALL WITHIN A SINGLE LAUNDRY CYCLE!
Is that enough terms to put it in????
To put this in terms of Chinese food,
Alright, alright, Iâll stop. But you get it.
Chicken nobody looks at. Sesame chicken. General Tsoâs. You get the point!
(I suddenly am curious who General Tso was. I wonder if he was a great man. Iâll get the researchers on that and report back on Monday.)
BACK TO SPORTS! We donât get moments like this often. Cam Schlittler grew up a lifelong Red Sox fan, and he had to go up against his childhood team in the biggest game of his life, and he was stellar. The coolest part about this was how calm he looked throughout. Underneath he may have felt a different way, but on the surface he was as cool as cool can be!
This performance was not just about baseball, but about the shirt that doesnât get any love in the closet. You never know when itâs going to be your time to shine. But when your number gets called, and youâre suddenly called into action, itâs GO TIME, and itâs time to SHOW UP!
Always be ready!
